Stylish Art Nouveau

Obecni Dum is a traditional coffeehouse with high ceilings, glittering crystal chandeliers and mirrors gracing the walls: Obecni Dum is the pearl in the crown of Prague’s cafe culture and one of the best examples of Art Nouveau interior design. A fountain with a marble-sculpted nymph dominates the far wall. Waiters in white a long white aprons, serving trolleys with a choice of pastries and desserts and soft piano music in the background; this is old-fashioned luxury.

Kavarna Obecni Dum: Three Course Lunch

Select some delectable pastries from the cake trolley: Raspberry cheesecake, walnut brownie with whipped cream or Sachertorte, all cakes are equally tempting. A real treat is the three-course tourist menu: vegetable soup, Czech goulash, schnitzel or beef in cream sauce, and a fruit salad to finish your meal. Wash it down with a glass of Moravian red wine or Pilsner Urquell.

Guided Tour of the Municipal House

The Obecni Dum is a municipal house, a combination of representative, recreational and social functions. Be sure to check out the exterior of this building. The facade is a swirl of ornaments, cast iron fencing and theatrical images. Under the domed roof is an arch that forms the framing of a symbolic mosaic: Tribute to Prague. Important Czech artists contributed to the interior decorations. Alfons Mucha, famous Czech Art-nouveau artist, painted the murals of the mayor’s hall. Visit Obecni Dum on a guided tour or listen to a classical concert in the Smetana Concert Hall.
