Is Czech a Difficult Language to Learn?
If Czech is difficult for you depends on what other languages you speak. If you have learned Polish or Slovak and to a certain extent Russian, the Czech language is not so difficult for you to master because Polish, Slovak and Russian share with Czech similarities in vocabulary and grammar.
Czech Grammar
The bad news is that Czech is characterized by complicated declensions. There are seven cases. This means that in combination with singular and plural forms of nouns and adjectives you will have to memorize fourteen different forms for each noun and adjective. The good news is that that people will understand you even if you make mistakes in declining the words correctly.
Czech Pronunciation
It is not the grammar of Czech that is so challenging, it’s the pronunciation of the consonants and certain vowel. Some examples:
C is pronounced as ts and ch is pronounced as ch as in loch
The most difficult sound of all is ř (R with háček), even some Czech children get extra pronunciation lessons if they don’t pronounce this sound correctly.
The only way to learn the pronunciation of Czech is to listen to its pronunciation.
