Who was Madame Tussauds?
Madame Tussauds was born in 1761 in Strasbourg (France) as Anna Maria Grosholtz. She was a wax worker by trade. She learned her profession from a doctor who at the time studied the anatomy of the human body using wax models. Her images were so lifelike that Louis XVI invited her to come and work at his court. Many aristocrats posed for her, among them were Benjamin Franklin and the philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau.
During the terror of Robespierre, she was forced to make death masks of guillotine victims. She was brought the severed heads of monarchists and republicans, including the severed heads of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette. She made herself indispensable, and thus saved her head.
