Wheelchair accessible museums in Prague
Wheelchair accessible museum in Prague offer disabled travelers barrier-free access. Sometimes the entrance is through a side door and at other museums there is a permanent or temporary ramp. Many museums have recently been made wheelchair-friendly, but in a few of cases the toilets have been overlooked. Top museums include Prague Castle and the Jewish Museum, which are certainly worth a visit, although not all halls and synagogues are barrier-free.
Wheelchair accessible museums in the Nove Mesto district
1. National Museum, Wenceslas Square 68, Nove Mesto, Prague
The entrance for the disabled and wheelchair users is via the New National Museum.
* The museum’s collection includes mineralogy, petrology and a special collection of precious and semi-precious stones. Very special is the large number of meteorites. The interior alone is worth a visit. The New National Museum is connected to the old building by a passage.
2. Municipal House, Obenci Dum, Namesti republiky 1, Nove Mesto, Prague
Entrance 10 cm obstacle and also a ramp, up with (a small) lift or stairs, toilet accessible
* Built between 1905 and 1911 and Art Nouveau at its best. The interiors have been decorated by leading artists and sculptors such as Alfons Mucha, Jan Preisler and Ladislav Šaloun. Art Nouveau enthusiasts can take a tour of the entire building. Concerts are given in the Smetana Hall. On the ground floor is cafe-restaurant Kavarna Obecni Dum with a beautiful Art Nouveau interior where mainly tourists and almost no Czechs come.
Wheelchair Friendly museums in the Josefov District
1. Museum of Applied Art, 17. Listopadu 2, Josefov, Prague
Entrance via side door, upstairs with elevator or stairs, toilet not accessible for wheelchair confined
* The exhibition of glassware and crystal ware is the showpiece of the museum. The rest of the collection consists of ceramics and porcelain, textiles and fashion, toys, jewelry and photos.
2. Jewish Museum, u Stare Skoly 1, Josefov, Prague
Only part of the Jewish museum is wheelchair accessible. Only the Maiselova Synagogue and the Spanish Synagogue have a stair-lift. The Old Jewish cemetery is also accessible, but you enter via the exit. A staff member will open the gate for you. Discounts are given because not all the buildings are wheelchair accessible.
Wheelchair-friendly museums in the Stare Mesto District
1. Wallenstein Riding School / Riding School, Valdstejnska 3, Mala Strana, Prague
Entrance without barrier, elevator to the café, toilet accessible
* The Wallenstein riding school is part of the National Gallery and hosts temporary exhibitions of Czech and international artists. Baroque bronze statues and a loggia with frescoes are in the garden, free entry and wheelchair accessible.
2. St Agnes Convent Museum, Anezska 12, Stare Mesto, Prague
The entire museum is wheelchair accessible and on the ground floor there are twelve seeing-through-touch replicas of medieval sculptures with explanatory text in Braille.
* The Museum Convent of St. Agnes consists of several buildings: the Poor Clare and Franciscan Convent, the Saint Francis Church, the Chapel of Mary Magdalen, the Private Oratory of Saint Agnes, the Chapel of Saint Barbara and the Tomb of Wenceslas I The permanent collection includes medieval and early Renaissance art from Bohemia and Central Europe.
3. Gallery of Steel Figures, 28. Rijna Street 13, Stare Mesto, Prague
Access via a side entrance
* All sculptures and installations in the Gallery of Steel Figures are 100% recycled objects made from scrap. The shape of the original object is still clear to see: gears, gearboxes, bolts and nuts. The installations are inspired by fairy tales and sci-fi heroes, as well as celebrities, animals and luxury cars.
Wheelchair Friendly museums in Mala Strana
1. Karel Zeman Museum, Saska 3, Mala Strana, Prague
The museum is entirely wheelchair accessible
* The museum offers an interactive experience where you discover Zeman’s fantasy world. He was a film director who combined live-action footage with animation. Go and fly in a flying machine, walk on the moon like Baron von Munchhausen or navigate the submarine from the world of Jules Verne.
Wheelchair accessible museums in the Hradcany district
1. Prague Castle, Hradcany, Prague
All buildings are fully accessible except the St George’s Basilica with a 10 cm high step and the two towers.
* The castle complex is a collection of churches, palaces, towers, museums and gardens. The crown jewels are kept here as well as the Wenceslas crown which is exhibited once every ten years. There are 2 types of tickets: a long and a short route. The tickets give access to 10 attractions, 8 of which are wheelchair accessible. The courtyards are wheelchair accessible but the garden, located on a slope are not wheelchair-friendly.
2. St. Vitus Cathedral, Hradcany, Prague
Entrance without barrier, via ramp, accessible toilet
St. Vitus Cathedral is located in the castle complex on one of the hills on which Prague is built. The kings of Bohemia were crowned and also buried in this cathedral. The highlight is the silver tomb of St John of Nepomuk and the stained glass windows depicting Slavonic saints were made by Alfons Mucha.
