Mulled Wine Easy to Make Follow the Recipe

Mulled wine is easy to make simply follow the instructions in the recipe. Svařené víno, or mulled wine in English, is the quintessential wintertime comforter. At every Christmas Market in Prague you will find numerous stands selling mulled wine. When you buy from several stands you will notice that the wine tastes different at each stand. This is because recipes vary. Each region and each household have their own recipes. There are two main methods: one with citrus fruit and a one without. For an extra kick of alcohol, you can add a shot of Tuzemský rum, a Czech type of rum made from sugar beets. Mulled wine with Czech rum an acquired taste.

Mulled Wine Simple Recipe

Ingredients:
1 liter red wine
120 gr sugar
1 cinnamon stick
5 cloves
Half a lemon

Method:
Heat all ingredients until hot, do not boil. Add sliced lemon and serve.

 

Fruity Recipe

Ingredients
1 bottle of red wine
1 cup water
120 gr sugar
Grated peel of 1 orange
Grated peel of 1 mandarin
2 cinnamon sticks
4 cloves

Method
1. Bring the water to a boil and add the sugar.
2. When the sugar is fully dissolved, add the orange and mandarin peels
3. Reduce heat and simmer for 5 minutes
4. Add the spices and simmer for another 10 minutes
5. Add the wine take off the heat when bubbles appear
6. Strain and serve

It is quite usual to add entire slices of orange as well as star aniseed and cardamom. Use half a bottle red wine and half a box grape juice for a less alcohol content.

Mulled Wine and Christmas Market

As svarene vino is intrinsically connected with Christmas Markets, you may consider visiting Prague in December. The markets are held from late November to early January. The main Christmas Market is at Old Town Square smaller ones are in various parts of Prague. Most neighbourhoods have their own markets.
