Soul Kitchen a Slice of Greece in Prague
Words above the entrance to a restaurant read: Soul Kitchen – Bougatsa. This will make the hearts of many a Greece lover beat faster. Bougatsa in Prague! Not in the centre of the city but in the quiet Vinohrady district, a small inconspicuous restaurant that serves the tastiest dishes from Greek cuisine.
Typical Taverna
Taverna is the best description for Soul Kitchen, but a taverna without an outdoor terrace. Small, intimate with six tables, Soul Kitchen is popular with Czechs.
Soul Kitchen Specialties
The menu includes Greek favourites such as chicken or gyros pites, ‘keftedes’ meatballs in English, and stuffed peppers, beetroot salad and choriatiki, the traditional Greek salad. The tzatziki served with each dish is the crowning glory of the meal, perfectly prepared with just enough garlic, cucumber and olive oil.
Like most restaurants in Prague, Soul Kitchen offers a lunch menu (poledni menu) at an attractive price. Soul Kitchen stands out from other Greek restaurants in Prague because of its authentic Greek taste.
Real Greek Coffee
The big surprise is the Greek coffee, traditionally made on single burner campingaz, boiled three times so that the coffee grounds settle. The second surprise is frappe, Greek iced coffee like you never tasted before (unless you are a Greece goer).
Real Greek Bougatsa
The third surprise is ‘bougatsa me krema’, a specialty from Thessaloniki, filo pastry filled with a mixture of semolina and custard. Bougatsa is not always available. A worthy substitute is spanakopita, filo pastry filled with a mixture of spinach and feta.
The Story of Frappe
Frappe was created by chance. At the 1957 Thessaloniki International Fair, Nestlé promoted a new chocolate drink that was easy to prepare in a shaker. When the employee who promoted this drink during the fair wanted to drink instant coffee during his break, there was no hot water. He put coffee and cold water in a shaker, shook it vigorously and frappe was created.
